Why Native Trees And Plants Are Important
At Green Umbrella Organisation, we are committed to promoting the use of native plants in landscaping and habitat restoration as we believe in the power of nature to sustain life.
What are Native plants?
Native plants are the indigenous terrestrial and aquatic species that have evolved and occur naturally in a particular region, ecosystem, and habitat.
What makes native plants so special?
Native plants serve as a natural habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife, while also providing an outdoor classroom where people can learn and appreciate their versatility and resilience.
Native plants eventually develop an efficient means of co-existing, creating harmony in the ecosystem. Conversely, when non-native plants are placed together, they form an inefficient and destructive relationship, leading to the damage or death of one or both plants.
Observing the plant and animal relationships unfold in front of your eyes can instill a deep appreciation of the value and interconnectivity of our ecosystems. Native plants form symbiotic relationships with bacteria, resulting in nitrogen, an essential element in plant growth and soil fertility.
Sustaining local biodiversity and habitat is crucial, and supporting native species plays a critical role. Some animals have evolved to form specialized relationships with plants, in which one or both species depend on each other for survival, like certain butterflies, moths, and birds. Such mutualistic connections are very helpful in sustaining local biodiversity and habitat.
Native plants serve as the cornerstone of a food web that ripples across every spectrum of life, beginning with reptiles, arthropods, and insects, providing nutrition for small mammals and birds, and extending to creatures as diverse as wildlife.
" You cannot protect the environment unless you empower people, you inform them, and you help them understand that these resources are their own, that they must protect them."
